News Stories of Note

The National Association of Scholars believes the various plans to make America more competative by pushing more kids into college won’t help—and I agree. NAS says the problem is highly overrated, and economics have as much to do with it as do education and other factors. They are right on the economic front, but I think they are wrong on whether there is a problem or not. I do believe the US is falling behind, but it’s not because of lack of education, it’s because of style of education. This is a worldview problem, not a years in the classroom problem. When you insist on teaching Evolution as the basis for math, you end up with people who don’t understand logic, math, or reality.

-Is America Losing it’s Innovative Edge?

The Federal Reserve, itself, has descended to the point of being a bank in order to try and “fix” the credt markets. Of course, when the wholesale distributor opens its doors to the public, they’re going to put a lot of retailers out of business—it doesn’t matter if the product is credit (or rather money, because that’s essentially what the Federal Reserve sells, is money), or snack cakes. Why go to a retailer when you can get your money for cheaper dorect from the maker? This is another component of the warped financial markets right now, a part of the sugar high the market is currently experiencing. At some point, the Fed will lose its status as a wholesaler, or it wil have to pull out of being an individual bank. More at Econblog.

Finally, three interrelated stories on healthcare. First, Mr. Obama has started blaming doctors for rising health costs. What you can expect out of this movement is pressure to reduce services, in order to reduce costs. In other words, rationing of care.

Second, there has been a lot of talk about mandated insurance as a solution for the problem of uninsured people. Of course, there is a dark side to this that many people won’t talk about. Once you’re legally required to be insured, then you’re essentially also legally required to do what the doctor orders, because if the doctor notes you’re not cooperating with what they think is a good course of treatment, then your insurance can be cancelled (it’s for your own good), and you’re not allowed to go without insurance. Your doctor thinks you should sell your guns? You’re doctor thinks you should take a medication you don’t see the need for? Your doctor thinks you need Eastern Meditation classes to relax? Well, you’d better hop to it, because if you lose your insurance for non-compliance, you’ll be subject to fines, and maybe other actions, in the future. Heritage has an article covering some of the other aspects of mandates posted on their blog, The Foundry.

- The Case Against Individual Mandates

Third, Mr. Obama is saying that he doesn’t want a single payer health care plan, and he doesn’t want to socialize medicine. Of course, that’s not what he was saying before he was elected. Check out this post from RedState to compare then to now.
